January 16, 2016

The first challenges of 2016

My thoughts today centre on two key issues. 2016 has started with a flurry of activity across Knowsley Council: Christmas already feels like it was an age ago.

First up, we have had Adult Education provision in Knowsley inspected by OfSTED this past week. Though we are not able to share the outcome judgement at this stage I wish to acknowledge the Knowsley Family & Community Education (FACE) team in Knowsley who are so effectively led by Angie O’Neill. The hard work and commitment to adult learners in Knowsley by FACE is a one of the shining lights of Education services in Knowsley.

The FACE inspection is also a helpful reminder that we have received notification of the re-inspection of Children’s Social Care in Knowsley. This will take place sometime in the next few months. I know Knowsley’s Director for Children’s Services, Paul Boyce, shares my desire to finally demonstrate to inspectors the improvements we have made over the past 18 months.

On Wednesday January 6th 2016, Knowsley Council made the difficult decision to permit the development of greenbelt lands in nine areas of the borough. This was not a decision made lightly by Councillors and we appreciate it was always going to be an issue that would resonate with many residents. I echo the comments of the leader of Knowsley Council, Cllr. Andy Moorhead, in upholding the right to protest whilst condemning intimidation. Much of the ‘criticism’ last week crossed a line and at times became personal abuse to some of my colleagues. I think the right to protest is something that is often taken for granted in our country. When it comes to protest, it is those individuals with the strongly-held views who are the most prominent and definitely the loudest when it comes to expressing views. Our decision to permit the developments did not please the protestors last week; but our hope as a council is that it will bring much needed relief to the borough’s finances and future opportunities for all of Knowsley’s residents.

I became a Labour Party Member because I believe in fairness and social justice. I stood for Council as a Labour candidate because I wanted to put my beliefs into action. Making difficult decisions at a time of extreme austerity requires the actions of a Council serious about securing a future for Knowsley. I stand by our decision as a proud Labour Party member acting within the values of our party.

On a lighter note, I want to acknowledge the number of comments received about the New Year resolution to improve my general health and well-being. I am walking more than I was before Christmas, and eating less of those things that have too much sugar. I have also received notice of several other fitness opportunities to really stretch myself – 5k and 10k runs. Like a true Politician I will take the opportunity to reflect on those invitations and give you my answer in due course.
