Bring on 2016/17

I am writing my first blog to you after the completion of the election period in Knowsley. Today I want to focus on the future of Children’s Services in Knowsley.

The 2016 election is complete and the most challenging campaign for a generation in our borough now lies in the past. You may recall I used my immediate post-election blog to congratulate and commiserate the winners and losers of 2016. What is clear already is that the council chamber is a different place and the expectations on elected members are heightened. Going from 63 to 45 members and, in the case of Labour to 42 members (welcome again to our 3 new Liberal Democrat colleagues!), gives a a wholly different aspect to the chamber. I will report more on this in future blogs and my genuine hope is for true debate in the interests of all Knowsley families and communities.

In the past couple of weeks I have spoken to a number of senior officers in the council in my continuing role as Cabinet Member for Children’s Services. I am proud to serve in this role through 2016/17 and thank Knowsley Council Leader Cllr. Andy Moorhead for his continued faith and trust in my ability to serve. My message to officers was one of hope, of expectation and – from my perspective – of inspiration for the year to come.

In a key meeting of senior officers I listed my vision for 16/17 and my three key priorities. In addition I invited them to share their own hopes and fears which was done with humour and honesty. I am pleased to report it was a well-received event with officers clear on our vision for improved and sustainable services against the backdrop of unprecedented government cuts. I thank the officers for giving their time to attend this event and remind them they are valued and appreciated for the hard work they do on behalf of children and families in Knowsley.

I hope you share the vision:

  • A sustainable Childrens Social Care Service.
  • A “GOOD” standard of education for all of our children and young people.
  • The creation of Children and Family Hubs.

I welcome any comment and query from residents and service users for our vision for Children’s Services in 2016/17. Please write to me or respond to this blog with comments.
