While out walking the ward recently, I came across racist and offensive graffiti in a local subway. Seeing that kind of hate in a shared public space is upsetting and completely unacceptable.
I reported it immediately to council officers and I am pleased that swift action was taken to have it covered as a priority. No one should feel uncomfortable or unsafe walking through their own neighbourhood.
What matters just as much is what happens next. I am now working with partners to look at how the subway can be refreshed and improved so it remains a clean and safe route for residents.
“There is no place for hate in our community and when it appears, it has to be challenged and dealt with quickly.”
Being a local representative means not ignoring things and hoping someone else will deal with them. It means stepping in, speaking up and following issues through properly.
